Samsung UN55C8000 With 3D support, excellent picture quality, great internet features, and an incredibly sleek, slim design that measures just under one-inch thick, the Samsung UN55C8000 is one of the best HDTVs available. This HDTV uses LED edge-lit backlighting with Samsung’s new precision dimming technology, resulting in substantially improved performance compared to other edge-lit LED sets. Unlike other edge-lit sets that suffer from LED backlighting issues such as corner light and a clouding effect in dark scenes, the UN55C8000 performs extremely well under all circumstances. And though it can’t quite match the performance of full-array local dimming sets such as the Samsung UN55B8500 or LG 47E8500, picture quality is excellent with very deep black levels and rich, accurate colors. The UN55C8000 also features Auto Motion Plus processing, which has three preset modes and a Custom mode for fine-tuning Judder Reduction and Blur Reduction. Video processing is solid overall, though it doesn’t handle 1080p/24 sources as well as some competitors. For best results, you’ll want to calibrate the picture and Auto Motion Plus settings (optimal settings can be found online).
To watch in 3D, you’ll need a compatible source such as Samsung’s BD-C6900 3D Blu-ray player and 3D Active Shutter Glasses, which are sold separately. 3D viewing provides for a fun and immersive experience, though it’s not quite as impressive as watching in a movie theater. There’s also a double image effect in some instances. Still, it’s a very cool feature that’s nice to have, and it’ll only get better as more 3D Blu-ray movies are released. Samsung also provides 2D to 3D conversion, but it doesn’t work nearly as well as watching native 3D content. You might want to use it occasionally, but for the most part you’ll be better off watching standard TV shows and movies in 2D. The UN55C8000 is one of the best Internet-streaming TVs on the market. Samsung Apps provides access to a huge collection of content services including Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, Vudu, Blockbuster, YouTube, and Pandora. There’s also DLNA support, which lets you stream audio, video, or photo files from a networked PC. However, you’ll need to use a wired connection unless you purchase an optional wireless adapter. Connectivity is otherwise solid with 4 HDMI inputs, 1 component input, 1 composite input, 2 USB ports, and a PC input.
Overall, the Samsung UN55C8000 is an excellent HDTV that combines a beautiful bezel with superb picture quality and cutting-edge technology. While it’s expensive and can’t quite match the performance of the best local-dimming LED and plasma sets, it is well worth the price for anyone seeking a sleek, solid performing LED TV with 3D support and Internet connectivity.
