This Midland WR100 Weather Radio is a must for every homeowner to have as a safety warning device.
I purchased mine in January after a tornado hit a town in indiana at 3:00 AM and caught many who were sleeping off guard and since then it has given us piece of mind at night and while we are sleeping. on most occasions the warnings are always 7 to 10 minutes ahead of the tv and radio alerts.
The LEDS advise you if theres a warning or a watch and it also scrolls along the screen along with a very loud auduble alarm, it also has the S.A.M.E. programming so you can pinpoint the correct NOAA weather station for your town or county eliminating false alarms that may alarm you from another area or town.
After having this radio I would not be without one and this radio performs great. There is also a red strobe light that you can purchase optional that also inhances the warnings at night to catch your attention should you be sleeping this also has performed well.
Overall this radio has performed great and has alerted us of a couple of tornado warnings and has given us ample time to react and prepare.

Worth the extra money, I originally bought the Midland WR300 Weather Radio, and was so disappointed in its performance, that I went and read more of the 500+ reviews on that product. Based upon a few of the reviews, I ended up purchasing this item from Reecom, and returning the Midland.
Much better backlight (green vs the Midland’s blue), and the biggest and most important difference is its simple setup and programming compared to the Midland.
Don’t be fooled by the Midland’s high ratings.

The Reecom R-1650 costs a little more, but well worth the money.

Why it’s a best pick: Pioneer VSX-1020-K 7.1 Home Theater Receiver

I picked up a Pioneer VSX-1020-K over the weekend. I have been building custom cabinetry and needed a slimmer (and cooler) receiver for our secondary viewing room and the 1020 seemed to fit the bill in large part based upon a pleasant experience with the 919/1019 and the elite 21.

For reference, the 1020 is replacing an Onkyo 1007, which I really enjoyed, but was a bit big for the cabinet and largely unused with a baby’s bedroom nearly adjacent to the area. Keep in mind, the Onkyo weighs 52 lbs and draws nearly 11 amps – not a fair fight between the two.

In comparison to the 1019/919 (which powers my second and third zones), the Pioneer VSX-1020-K looks very similar, but Pioneer removed the blue led power button (they did the same with the bdp-320 from the 51fd last year as well). The front panel buttons have been reconfigured slightly, but overall the two look very similar.

I have the 1020 configured as 5.1 plus wides. The speaker setup was pretty easy, but it appears that setting it up as normal plus wides would prevent you from operating Zone 2 despite the manual saying the contrary.

In terms of audio quality, the receiver sounds very good and similar to the 1019/919. That said, when turned louder (say -5db), it appears to lose its legs a bit sooner than the 1019. I heard a bit more distortion in playing music loudly (i was alternating the same speakers and source via speaker switch before I had the two connected). That said, I would think most folks would not be able to tell a difference at normal volume levels, but the power draw cut from last year does seem to manifest itself at loud levels in my amateurish testing. Please do not try to pull every thread in my comparison – just an average guy comparing the two side by side.

Running MCACC was as simple as other pioneer models, but the system did seem to be a bit too generous as to the speaker size of the speakers in my setup (audyssey classified them as small and set the individual speaker crossovers at 100hz). I have been using the wide listening mode and have found it reasonably effective in providing a broader sound array for the wide room. I will need more critical listening time to compare it to Audyssey DSX’s wide presence processing mode. Overall, I am pleased with the sound quality of the 1020, but it could benefit by a bit more power. I would caution about tying to drive large or inefficient speakers with this receiver if your listening preferences are very loud.

The remote is an improvement in that it is learning, but a step back in dark room navigation. Yes the keys glow in the dark, but labels are small and difficult to quickly identify. It is miles ahead of Denon’s odd remotes, but lacks some of the simple and easy to identify buttons of Onkyo.

The Pioneer VSX-1020-K has run cooly, which is an improvement from the space-heater my Onkyo could be.

The Pioneer VSX-1020-K does offer a really good listening experience for a very light (and presumably efficient) unit. That said, I do lament a few things: onscreen osd – at least volume/source/audio codec; a slightly ergonomic remote; and assignable speakers to let you customize presence and zone 2.

Overall, I am happy with the unit and pleasantly surprise how cooly it runs.

I recently installed an entirely new media center consisting of the Samsung LN46B650 LCD TV, an Onkyo TX-SR606 AV Receiver, these speakers (with the Monoprice 16 gauge speaker wires), these inexpensive speaker mounts, HDMI cables that cost less than a dollar each, and a PS3. All I can say is “WOW”!

I am so glad I didn’t buy more expensive speakers than these, because these sound awesome. I was a little hesitant at first because I had never heard of the Energy brand, but after reading the reviews here and on CNET, I gave it a shot and I’m so glad that I did!

Crisp sound, powerful bass… I couldn’t ask for anything more. The only complaint I have about these speakers is that the positioning, size, and angle of the 5-way speaker wire connections on the back makes it difficult to use regular sized banana plugs. But I didn’t even deduct a star for that because the sound was excellent when I just twisted the wire ends and inserted them bare.

Regular TV sounds awesome. Movies sound awesome. PS3 games like Rock Band sound awesome. Music streamed from my PC to my PS3 sounds awesome.

The slowest step is downloading the Squeeze Server software that runs on your PC; however, I prefer this to having a CD-ROM that I’ll never use again. While CDs are not expensive, it does save the manufacturer a little as well. Once downloaded, the installation process is very easy.
Once this is in place, you are ready to configure the controller and receiver. Once you install the battery into the controller, you are prompted to begin the configuration process. The on screen instructions are pretty straightforward. The one thing that I found annoying was around entering my wireless network information. I do not broadcast my SSID, and I use 128-bit WEP encryption. I had to use the wheel to key in my SSID by hand followed by the 26 hexadecimal key. I can understand why Logitech made this trade off because you only have to enter this information once, and alternatives would require more complicated hardware either to allow a more tactile entry on the controller or USB connectivity to your PC where you could make use of a full keyboard. Neither of these complications is really worth the cost so grit your teeth and be thanking that you only have to do it once.

A final note on setup. If you are able to connect a laptop to your wireless network, you have all the technical knowledge you need. However, if you needed the “Geek Squad” or someone else to set this up for you, you should expect to need the same level of assistance to get this device up and running.
USAGE: The Squeezebox is a great “glue” device in that it brings the best of both worlds together from digital music on my PC and my stereo. I get about half of my music electronically this days, and I really only listened to it on my computer or my mp3 player. With the Squeezebox, my complete music collection is again available to my stereo even though my computer is on a different floor of the house! I also love the fact that I have access to all of the CDs that I have ripped to mp3s through my stereo without having to change discs. I also have access to my playlists that jump from one CD to the next at will. In addition, my stereo has a poor antenna. Thanks to the Squeezebox; however, I can get crystal clear reception of any radio station that streams music over the internet. So, not only do I have access to the majority of my local radio stations, I have a wealth of additional choices for national radio stations that stream. And if that’s not enough, you can also access your digital subscription music services such as Rhapsody. Simply store your login information in your Squeeze Network account, and you’ll be able to stream any music through your stereo that you would using Rhapsody on your PC. There are other services as well. Of course iTunes is not included, but this isn’t an Apple product so shouldn’t come as a shock.
I found it easy to control all of these features from the iPod like controller. A clearly marked “home” button takes you to the main menu at any point. It was a minor adjustment to get used to the wheel feature. I have owned Sandisk mp3 players which do not use a wheel but rather a directional pad. This is a minor point. What really matters is the easy of use of the menus. The wheel drives the controller’s 2.4 inch display which allows you straightforward access to your music library on your computer as well as the plethora of internet radio stations. After scrolling to your selection, the center button is used for selection. Other buttons are dedicated to volume up and down, pause, previous track, and next track buttons. All operate as expected.

Finally, I recently had a power outage that seemed to get things out of sync between the controller and the receiver. I tried a couple of things to sort it out, but at the end of the day, the controller is a computer. So I did the equivalent of rebooting (much like you have to do with cell phones at times), and I removed the battery for about a minute – the amount of time was purely a guess. After replacing the battery, the controller booted up and everything was back to normal again.
CONCLUSION: As I said at the beginning, this is a music lover’s dream. In a way, it made my home stereo relevant again. At the end of the day, you have easy setup and great, easy to use features. For me it is a no brainer five star item.

Another feature accessible from the controller’s main menu is a series of settings that you can change. Here you find ways to change your wallpaper, date and time format, clock settings, etc. Further, you have control over screensavers, and display dimming timers, etc.
The display itself is sharp and of the same quality of the Logitech Harmony One’s display. If your collection has the album art stored with the music, you will see the album cover for the song that you are playing. This works very much the same as Windows Media Mobile does on a PDA. During radio station play it simply shows an icon of a broadcasting radio tower with the station info.

Let me start this review by saying that I am not a tech person. I am a typical consumer in that I love movies and music and I want the best possible audio/video experience without too expensive a price tag. I want something that I can work and looks nice in my living room.
This is a long review, so here’s the summary: Absolutely amazing sound. In the past I always felt that I had to settle for lesser music sound to get great movie sound–not with this system. Movies, music, Internet radio, games–everything is terrific. This receiver has great features normally only found on much more expensive systems. What sets this apart from other receivers is the internet/computer connections. Retails around $800 but you can find it in the mid-$500 at the time of this review. PC compatible, so you’ll need Windows 7, but you can play your IPod through the

USB port in front. It was somewhat complicated to set up and to learn to work the remote, but the manual is well-written and assistance from Onkyo is available. Did I mention mind-blowing amazing sound? The one downside: I had to call in a tech friend to set it up. (My problem- not really the fault of the machine.)
OK here’s the rest:
I am an Onkyo fan–my previous receiver was an Onkyo and has been a great system with no problems. This model is a big step up, though. If you don’t need all the features, this might be overkill. If you don’t have Windows 7, or you don’t want to hook up your computer to this system, or you don’t need or plan to use 11 speakers, again, this might be more than you need.
Enough HDMI inputs are provided for a blu-ray DVD player, a VCR or DVD recorder, satellite or cable, game console, personal computer, and a camcorder. One HDMI output is used to connect to the TV or projector. If you want to take advantage of on-screen menus, your TV needs to be connected via the HDMI OUT.
The receiver provides a wide range of audio and video settings. The menus take some getting used to. Basic audio choices include: treble, bass, subwoofer level, center level, dynamite EQ, Dynamic volume, late night, music optimizer, Re-EQ, Re-EQ (THX), and Audio Selector. Video settings include wide mode, picture mode, brightness, contrast, hue and saturation.
This is the first time I’ve had a game console set up to this type of speaker/receiver system. It will blow you out of the room–almost literally. I thought my computer speakers and subwoofer produced great game sounds- I had no idea how strong the sound quality is in some games until I heard this. I am not a gamer but others in my house are and this is quickly taking over the living room. (Something to consider before you buy this.)
The audio options seem almost unlimited. If you have a blu-ray discs or DVD’s you can enjoy DTS or Dolby digital sound. With analog or digital TV you can enjoy Dolby Pro-logic IIz, DTS Neo:6, or Onkyo’s own DSP listening modes. The settings are particularly strong for medium-sized rooms and the Dolby Pro-logic setting is great for action movies or games with helicopter and other sound effects. (I played "The Fugitive" which sounded wonderful.)
I was surprised that a microphone was included with the receiver: it is used to set up the acoustics in the room through Audyssey MultEQ. By positioning the microphone at the height of a seated listener (you need a tripod to do this) you take six measurements from the various seating points in the room and it calibrates the speaker balance.
A few words about speakers: To get the 7.1 channel sound you need 7 speakers and a powered subwoofer. The receiver provides THZ Surround EX–but you need to have THX-certified speakers to truly benefit from this feature. The system can accommodate up to 11 speakers. (I quickly learned that my 7 speakers aren’t nearly powerful enough to take full advantage of this system. Guess what’s next on my shopping list.)
You can use the Ethernet cable connection to hook up your computer and listen to music files stored on your computer and also internet radio through Pandora, Rhapsody, Sirius or whatever system you prefer. A 100Base-TX Ethernet network is recommended. Wireless systems won’t produce as good a sound.
Here are some other things I like:
The English-language manual is separate from the French and Spanish manual. This makes it easy to read through and keep nearby– it’s not the size of a phone book. And it’s fairly well-written, despite the very technical nature of the equipment.
I like the THX Loudness plus. Sometimes with THX systems, you have to turn the volume up high to get the right mix of dialogue and sound effect. This THX system has "loudness plus" which means that you can play it at a lower volume and still get the full range of sound. In addition, the Audyssey Dynamic EQ also adjusts settings for lower volume. The Dynamic volume notes the variation in volume levels between your TV programs and commercials and shifts to maintain your desired volume level–no more screaming infomercials.
What I am not crazy about:
The front of the receiver is busy – not particularly streamlined or "pretty"–lots of buttons and jacks which might be a turnoff for some. I don’t mind the tech look in my living room, but others may not appreciate that. Definitely not a B&O type display.
You can set Macros to enable one-button commands for multi-components. For instance, there is a default "My Movie" setting which turns on the TV, the Onkyo DVD player, the AV receiver, sets the input of the receiver to BD/DVD, and starts playing the DVD. But the presets assume you have Onkyo equipment- which I don’t.
I hope this gives you enough info to at least compare this system to any others you’re considering. I think it is amazing and I am thrilled to have everything connected and integrated so beautifully. I am still on a big learning curve with all the settings and the remote but I know that’s just a matter of time and practice. It’s a lot of bang for your buck.

As you are probably aware the price of Blue-ray players have really come down over the last year. The Toshiba BDX-1100 is an impressive entry level Blu-ray DVD Player with great performance and features not normally found on players in this price range.
The Toshiba BDX-1100 is a stylish Blu-ray DVD Disc player which does everything you want a basic Blu-ray player to do. It plays the most popular video formats BD-ROM, DVD, BD-R, BD-RE, DVD-R, DVD-RW, CD-R, CD, CD-RW, AVCHD and CD-DA. It automatically Up Converts non 1080P formats to 1080P with good clarity. It provides support for MP3 audio playback in two channel stereo and has built in surround sound decoders for Dolby Digital, Dolby True HD and Dolby Digital plus, DTS and DTS HD.

In addition to all the "Basics" the BDX-1100 has a built in SD Card Reader/Writer/Viewer which will allow you to view AVCHD, digital camera movie files and digital camera picture files easily on your TV making your TV an entertainment HUB for not only DVD’s and Blu-rays but pictures and Home-made movies too.
The Toshiba BDX1100 does not support 3D (three dimension video decoding) or WMA (Windows Media Audio Files), and while it does have an ethernet jack for extra content found on BD-Live Discs, it does not support video streaming services such as NetFlix, Wi-Fi or Wireless Streaming.
Lastly the processor in the Toshiba DBX-1100 is slower than that found on higher models. Blu-ray DVD’s with lots of java script on them can be slow to initially load. We found our PS3 loaded the same blu-ray DVD’s quicker than the Toshiba BDX-1100.
Summary:
The Toshiba BDX-1100 is a great entry level blu-ray DVD player with full 1080P support and up converstion, SD memory card slot and HDMI 1.3 output. If your are a moderate blu-ray user who is looking for a stylish player to watch an occasional blu-ray DVD then the Toshiba DBX-1100 blu-ray player maybe just the ticket for you. With the added functionality of an SD Card slot and support for AVCHD files and built in jpeg picture viewer this player has a great feature set found usually on players costing twice as much.
If on the other hand you are a heavy DVD viewer and require support for 3D, WMA, Streaming internet services like NetFlix then the Toshiba DBX-1100 is not the blu-ray player for you.
